Starry Night in Irving
April 2009
16 x 20
Oil on stretched canvas

This painting is based on Van Gogh’s Starry Night. He was in an insane asylum when he painted it. In his painting, the village was a remembrance of his home town. There was a church in the center of the painting under the sky, and various houses and orchards from the village.

In my painting, the sky is copied from Van Gogh, but the village is Irving, Texas. At the left bottom there is the Irving Arts Center, where Irving Chorale performs. In the center bottom is Plymouth Park Methodist Church where we rehearse. Next, to the right of the church, is Texas Stadium, with roads leading back to the Dallas skyline. To the far right is the Mandalay Canal in Los Colinas, with the bell tower and the clock tower. The frame was given to me by Jeff Chitwood. It has been used with a promotional poster at the country club where he worked.

Irving Chorale’s first concert in October ‘09 was Starry, Starry Night, a collection of space and stars songs, in connection with the Arts Center’s NASA exhibit. We used my painting on our programs and season brochure. The actual framed painting was raffled off at the concert. It was won by Mr. Horn, Brad Horn’s father.
